DJI’s latest action cameras, the DJI Osmo Action 5 and Action 5 Pro have both leaked online ahead of their launch. Is the Osmo Action 5 legitimate?

Osmo Action 5 at the FCC

The Osmo Action 5 Pro has already hit the FCC earlier this month, confirming that its release is imminent. We have yet to see the standard Action 5 pass through the same regulatory process. Depending on the level of similarity with the Pro version, it might not need to go through a separate approval process.

From the two leaked images of the cameras, both models appear to have the same specs listed on the outer edge of the lens: a 1/1.3″ CMOS sensor at F2.8 with a 155-degree FOV. The only visible difference between the two models is the “PRO” branding on the Pro model.

Given these similarities and the fact that we have only seen a real-life image of the Pro model, which has also passed through the FCC, it remains unclear whether there will be two distinct models. It doesn’t make much sense for DJI to produce two models with identical camera specs unless the differences lie in software capabilities, such as resolution and framerate limitations.

Parallels to the DJI Mini lineup

This approach mirrors DJI’s strategy with its Mini drone lineup. With the third-generation DJI Mini drone, the company first launched the DJI Mini 3 Pro, followed by the DJI Mini 3, which offered fewer features at a lower price.

DJI likely found success with this staggered release strategy in its drone lineup and is now applying the same model to its action cameras. By initially releasing a Pro version with advanced features and subsequently launching a standard version with reduced capabilities, DJI can cater to different market segments and price points.

This strategy enables DJI to maximise its profits by initially releasing the PRO model, capturing sales from enthusiasts willing to pay a premium for advanced features. Later, DJI can release a more affordable model for those who are not interested in the PRO features, appealing to a broader audience.
