Australia has been working on its drone rules for the past few years which have been fairly laid back and not enforced. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) plans to change this by bringing in drone registration and accreditation to crackdown on illegal flights.

Australia is bringing in drone registration and accreditation

CASA sent out a newsletter sharing news around the new drone registration and accreditation requirements coming into play within in the next few years.

The new registration rules require any drone weighing over 250-grams to be registered to be able to fly it outdoors around Australia. The rules also state you must be at least 16 years old, have an Aviation Reference Number (ARN), and you must enter the key details about your drone, including the serial number into myCASA.

It’s unknown how much drone registration will cost at this time, but the registration period will last for 12 months and must be renewed.

You will also be required to become accredited before you can fly. The accreditation consists of completing an online test that can be done as many times you require until you pass. A certificate is then sent to you once you have completed it. This test is free and must be renewed every three years.
