Last year when CASA retired its own drone safety app, ‘Can I Fly There?’ it promised to work with 3rd parties to bring more options and a better solution to the market. CASA first achieved that with Google’s Wing Aviation making the OpenSky app. A few months later and two new apps are out for you to take your pick.
New drone safety apps in partnership with CASA
The two new apps introduced in partnership with CASA today includes ok2fly by Avsoft and Air Mobility Platform by AiRXOS (GE Aviation). These apps work in the same way as OpenSky overlaying airport information and flight zones over a dynamic map.
ok2fly is available on the web only at this time, you can enter an address and location-based information will be given telling you your flight status, elevation, coordinates, sunset, sunrise, and flight time. More importantly, it shows the nearby airports and helicopter pads.
Air Mobility Platform is available on the web and both, Android and iOS with very similar functionality. You are also able to enter a location and you will be greeted with a load of warnings if you are within restricted airspace. You are also able to switch between recreational, excluded RPA and ReOC.
OpenSky is replacing CASA’s app ‘Can I Fly There?’ with a new Google inspired user interface a few more features to make flying safely easier. The app is simple to use with a few pages to navigate through, the map, menu and flight checklist. Similarly to Google Maps on app launch you are confronted with a map and search bar to find your flying location. Once the location is entered a checklist shows airports or controlled air spaces within the flight location along with a checklist to look at before flying.
