Earlier this week Skydio, makers of the Skydio R1 released its new AI-driven Skydio 2 drone. The Skydio 2 incorporates a 4K 60fps HDR camera with a maximum autonomous speed of 36 mph (~57 kph) and a 23 minute flight time. Skydio 2 is the drone you’ve been waiting for.

UPDATE: Skydio has confirmed the Skydio 2 is only available in the United States and Canada and hope to have it available around the world in 2020.

The Skydio 2 drone has three methods to fly the drone, using the free app, the Skydio Beacon or the Skydio Controller. Skydio 2 utilizes the NVIDIA Jetson TX2 AI computing device which can complete 1.3 trillion operations per second. The Skydio 2 has six two hundred degree cameras, the equivalent of 45MP feeding data directly to the Jetson TX2 onboard computer.

The out of the box method to fly the Skydio 2 drone is via the mobile phone app. It allows for full control over the drone, access to various flight modes and camera functions along with integrated maps for easy drone tracking and management.

The Skydio 2 shoots in stunning 4K 60fps HDR and can take 12MP photos. The Skydio Beacon extends the Skydio 2’s range to 1.5km, the bonus of the drone tracking the beacon for a spot on tracking. The beacon also allows the drone to be moved in flight and modes such as dronie, hover, angle track can be activated.

Looking to get the perfect cinematic drone shots? The Skydio Controller is perfect for you. The controller extends the range to 3.5km and allows for almost near to no latency control of the Skydio 2. The Skysio Controller turns the Skydio 2 into a great DJI Mavic 2 Pro alternative with even better obstacle avoidance.

The Skydio team has also partnered with DroneDeploy to bring the Skydio 2 into the workplace for inspections, mapping, analytics, and data collection to name a few. Skydio 2 is also perfect for first responders thanks to the great sensor package and situational awareness the drone introduces into the emergency zones.

We are currently working on getting a Skydio 2 down under to test it in the harsh environments Australia has. Skydio 2 shows great potential to be the perfect drone you can fly when your feeling like it and autonomously fly when you want to stay in the moment or enjoy the activity you are doing. Let us know if you would like us to test anything!
